A prescription acne gel, Metrogel is generally used to treat rosacea. Rosacea can cause redness, bumps, pimples, and irritated eyes. It is not acne vulgaris, and therefore, it cannot be treated with the same treatments used for acne vulgaris. Most acne treatments will only further irritate rosacea inflicted skin and cause many of the symptoms of rosacea to flare up instead of going down.
Metrogel is based around an ingredient known as metronidazole, which can fight bacterial infections and protozoa. However, metronidazole can actually cause redness and irritation in itself, even though it is supposed to be fighting those particular problems. Ironic right? Therefore, we don’t think that metrogel would actually provide any results, let alone the desired results.
Metrogel is a prescription yes, meant to treat a very specific medical condition. But instead of getting at the root causes of rosacea or even just treating the symptoms, Metrogel causes many of the same symptoms and problems. And unfortunately, the counterintuitive approach does not provide the desired results, but only the negative side effects.
