Also marketed under the names of Tazorac, Avage, and Zorac, Tazarotene is a prescription retinoid meant to be applied topically in cream or gel form. It has been used to treat psoriasis as well as acne and sun damaged skin. It is commonly sold in a 0.05% concentration for more sensitive skin and 0.1% concentration for hardier skin.
Common side effects of Tarzarotene include worsening of acne, dry skin, itchiness, redness, extreme drying, and cracking of the skin. Essentially its use can result in the exact opposite reactions compared to what you are looking for. They claim that most of these side effects decrease after 2-4 weeks. But that is a bit extreme to say the least. They suggest using a moisturizer in combination, but some moisturizers can be too much for now sensitive skin.
There is really nothing to be done once you’ve already suffered the side effects associated with Tazarotene. There is a reason it is sold only as a prescription instead of over the counter as you would find with benzyl peroxide. Its side effects are too severe to not be controlled. If you experience worsening of your acne, it is definitely not the desired result, and really, we wouldn’t suggest using it for any case of acne.
