An acid form of vitamin A, tretinoin is a commonly used acne treatment for various stages and types of acne. It is also known as ATRA. It can be found in either creams or gels, and it is generally sold as Renova or Retin-A. It was actually the first retinoid to be used in the treatment of acne, and it has also been used to treat photo-aging. Essentially speaking, tretinoin is used to increase skin cell and collagen production while increasing the rate at which your skin sheds away dead skin cells. It is used for general skin health. However, it has been known to cause certain side effects such as redness, irritation, excess sensitivity to cold and heat as well as the sun, peeling, dandruff, scaling, etc. It should not be used if you suffer certain skin conditions, and it is not right for everyone. It will not work for everyone, and those that it does work for often complain of the side effects and have to measure them against the actual benefits.
